The One Where the Dome Geeks Are Almost Ready to Start Building

Holy cow, time flies! It's been a long time since we last posted anything here, but now, at the end of April 2007, it looks like we really are about to get started.

Without going into too much detail, last year we decided to see if it would be cost-effective to hire a builder to manage the project for us, rather than do it ourselves. It took about 9 months, starting in the spring and ending in November, to discover that we really should have just stuck with the original plan to be our own general contractors. Live and learn, eh? Of course we also helped my (the Geek's) parent build their dome home, which was a great learning experience and also provided us with some valuable contacts.

So anyway, this year we renewed contacts with some of the subcontractors we'd met in 2005, and started working with many of the same subs that my parents used last year, and we now have almost everything ready to go to the bank and get a construction loan. We have submitted the forms and fees to get our land use permit, and are about to do the same for our building permit. Assuming the bank gives us the go-ahead without requiring any additional information or prep work, we could break ground as early as mid-May. Awesome.

If you had asked me in 2005, I never could have guessed the turns this project would take before we finally got to this point. And while we have had to endure delays and setbacks, I really would not change any of it. We've learned a lot, and I think we're just a bit wiser than when we started out.

That's all I've got to say for now. It's Sunday morning and time to get ready for church. But as new developments take place, we will be sure to post them for your information, education, and any other benefit you may hope to gain from reading about our little adventure.
